About Us
Built by people who care.
We are a driven nonprofit using open-source technology to put free mobility devices in the hands of children who need them most.
Our Story
From a simple idea to a global mission.
The Story Behind the Mission I was born with severe bilateral clubfoot and, as a child, was also diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Navigating these compounded medical struggles early in life gave me an intimate understanding of physical vulnerability. My family, many of whom came from an underserved region in Africa, had very little to their name. Yet, through their extraordinary sacrifice, I received the surgeries and life-sustaining treatments that allowed me to take my first steps and manage my health. Because of my roots, I know how devastating a lack of access to care can be. I know firsthand that physical independence is not just a clinical milestone—it defines a human being's dignity, confidence, and future. The Problem: Prohibitive Costs & Lost Time Standard commercial pediatric mobility devices are prohibitively expensive, creating an insurmountable financial barrier for underinsured domestic families and developing communities globally. Insurance approval cycles routinely take 6 to 12 months, and during formative early childhood, children deprived of self-directed mobility experience measurable delays in spatial cognition, social development, and motor agency. Globally, the deficit is even more severe: up to 97% of individuals needing physical assistive devices never receive them. The Solution: High-Tech, Zero-Cost Mobility The Mobility Initiative is a manufacturing nonprofit dedicated to engineering, manufacturing, and distributing specialized assistive mobility devices to children with physical disabilities worldwide, 100% free of charge. By leveraging open-source digital designs and an advanced 3D-printing farm, we bypass traditional medical supply chains to deliver high-quality equipment directly to waiting families. What Makes Our Devices Special? Vibrant & Fully Customizable: We believe mobility aids shouldn't look like sterile medical equipment. Because we manufacture every part in-house, each device is customized to the child's personality—from bright colors to unique, playful themes that make them proud to move. Open-Source & Operational: Built on highly engineered, open-source architectural foundations, our production pipeline is fully validated. We are out of the R&D phase and actively manufacturing today. Future R&D Pipeline: Philanthropic capital not only funds our current production but enables us to bring on industrial designers and engineers to conceptualize, prototype, and release an entirely new suite of zero-cost physical assistive technologies. Your Impact: Give the Gift of Independence By funding The Mobility Initiative, you are actively giving a child the profound gift of experiencing the world on their own terms. — Jallal "J" Elouad, FounderWhat We Stand For
